I'm Jack, and I run Legacy Painting out of Yorktown. Six years in, 800-something jobs done, and I still can't walk past a house with peeling trim without mentally repainting it.
What I actually enjoy is the part most painters skip — sitting down with you, figuring out what you're picturing versus what your walls can handle, and being straight with you about it.
Hampton Roads humidity has ruined more paint jobs than bad technique ever has, so a lot of what I write here comes straight from arguments I've won (and lost) with Virginia weather.
The best time to hire a painter depends on the job. Winter is the best time for interiors: crews have openings, the heat keeps paint drying well. Exteriors are best painted in spring and fall, but those months book up. Summer works for exteriors with careful timing around humidity and storms.
Winter: The Easiest Time to Book an Interior
Once the weather turns cold, exterior work slows down and our crews have room on the calendar. That’s good news for interiors. With the heat on, paint dries and levels well, and dry furnace air means recoat times stay predictable. The worry most people have about is the cold, and in a heated house it simply isn’t a problem.

If an interior is on your list for the year, winter is when you’ll get the date you want with the least waiting.
Spring and Summer: Book Exteriors Early
By April, our exterior schedule is usually full through July. Everyone notices their peeling trim at the same time, once the weather warms up and they’re outside again. Summer adds its own delays: humid mornings when the siding is too wet to paint, and afternoon storms that can stop a job halfway through a wall.
A Hampton, VA family called in late May and couldn’t get on the schedule until the middle of July. The blue Victorian below was painted in July.

If you’re already seeing signs your exterior needs repainting, don’t wait for warm weather to call. The homeowners who book in winter are the ones who get spring dates.
Fall: The Second Exterior Window
If you ask me for the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Virginia, fall is right up there with spring. October and early November in Hampton Roads usually bring mild afternoons, lower humidity and fewer storms than summer. The limits are shorter days and heavy morning dew, so the crew starts later and stops earlier, and nights have to stay above the paint’s minimum temperature.

How to Lock In a Start Date
The sooner you get an estimate, the sooner you’re on the calendar. With us it goes: a free estimate at your home, a written proposal, then we confirm the date. Whoever you hire, check their license first; the Virginia DPOR license lookup takes a minute and shows whether a contractor is licensed and in good standing.
