Jack Keller, the owner of Legacy Painting 757, recently became a Board Member of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads (YVCHR). Keller has a history with YVCHR, having been involved with the organization as a teenager.
Here’s what he had to say about the experience and how he plans to contribute today:
During my middle school years and the early part of my high school days, I had the privilege of volunteering for YVC between 2012 and 2014.
As a volunteer, my tasks were diverse and spread across different areas. I found myself lending a hand wherever it was needed.
One of the activities I was involved in was cleaning up the environment in our community. I specifically remember picking up trash along the Nolan Trail. This was an essential task as it helped maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the trail, making it a better place for everyone to enjoy.
In addition to environmental work, I also had the opportunity to work with the elderly in various retirement communities. This was a particularly fulfilling experience. Engaging with the elderly involved helping them with different exercises designed to keep them physically fit and mentally alert. I also assisted them in creating crafts and playing bingo and other games.
One of my primary goals during my time with YVC was not only to serve but also to help the people I interacted with to grow in different ways. I aimed to enhance their well-being, boost their spirits, and improve their overall quality of life.
This time around serving as a Board Member my mission to spread awareness about YVCHR. I believe that not enough people are familiar with the great work that the organization does. While some people might already be aware of it, there’s always room to inform more people about this fantastic organization. The more people know about it, the more volunteers we can attract, and the more good we can do in our communities.
Being a part of YVCHR is still a learning experience for me. I believe that by interacting with different people and dealing with various situations, we all have the opportunity to learn and grow personally.
